Who are we?

The Austrian Cochlear Implant Society (ÖCIG) Founded in 1992 by Franz K. Wimmer, who became completely deaf in 1984 after several sudden hearing losses, Franz Wimmer was the first Austrian patient to receive a multi-channel cochlear implant from Prof. Ernst Lehnhardt in 1986. Based on his own experience, Franz K. Wimmer has dedicated his life to supporting those affected by hearing loss.

  • Advice and support for deaf and hard-of-hearing children, adolescents and adults, including their families.
  • Holding information events for those affected and the interested public.
  • Exchange of experiences and information between affected individuals and their family members.
  • Contact with other associations and organizations for the hard of hearing, the deaf, and cochlear implant users.
  • Holding events for leisure activities and maintaining contact among those affected.

Supported by members and donations

ÖCIG is financed exclusively through membership fees and donations. This support allows us to continue our work, inform those affected, and implement important projects related to cochlear implants.

Informational Articles on Hearing Implants

Types of Hearing Implants

Hearing implants offer modern solutions for severe hearing loss or deafness. Cochlear implants directly stimulate the auditory nerve, middle ear implants support sound transmission, bone conduction implants use the skull bone to transmit sound, and auditory brainstem implants bypass both the auditory nerve and the inner ear to improve speech understanding in everyday life.
